The rain has finally ended on the freshly mowed back forty.
The clouds begin to break, and that unmistakable smell of fresh-cut grass rises from the field, mixing with cedarwood and rain-soaked earth. Everything smells clean, green, and alive.
My friends and I have been waiting for this.
Gloves in hand, we make our way onto the field. A cool breeze rolls across the forty carrying the earthy, green character of oakmoss and vetiver, while a subtle touch of tobacco hangs somewhere in the distance.
The grass is still damp beneath our feet. The earth is dark from the rain. The last traces of that cool, ozone-filled storm air slowly give way to the warmth of the afternoon sun.
We take our positions.
Someone steps up to the plate.
For a moment, everything is still.
